Access Holdings, owners of Access Bank confirms death of CEO and former bank MD, Herbert Wigwe on 9 February 2024.
Wigwe, alongside his wife, Doreen, and son, Chizi, died in a helicopter crash, in the United States.
United States transportation authorities announced yesterday that there were four passengers and two crew members on the flight.
The four passengers on the chartered flight were travelling from California to Nevada, authorities said.
A condolence message from President Bola Tinubu also confirmed the fourth passenger on the flight as Abimbola Ogubanjo, former Chair of the Nigerian Exchange Group.
This implies that all passengers on the chartered flight were Nigerians, a development that Tinubu described as “an overwhelming tragedy beyond comprehension.”
Although Nigeria has revealed their identities, search and rescue operators are still unable to locate their remains as at this morning, two days after.
US Aviation authorities identified the craft as Eurocopter EC130 helicopter operated by a local charter company in California.
It crashed around 10 p.m. local time near Nipton, California, described by the New York Times as an unincorporated community about 60 miles south of Las Vegas in eastern San Bernardino County.
The chopper left Palm Springs, California at 8:45 p.m. enroute to Boulder City, Nevada, according to Michael Graham, a board member with the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) who gave details of the ill-fated flight at a news conference yesterday.
Graham said the aircraft crashed near Halloran Springs, California around 10:08 p.m. killing the two crew members and four passengers aboard.
Witnesses told NTSB that rain and wintry conditions in the area may have encumbered the night flight.
Mr. Graham said he will release the names of those on the flight when their identities are confirmed and their family members notified.
Access Bank Plc, where Mr. Wigwe was CEO, took to X, formerly Twitter, this Sunday morning to announce his passage.
