Anambra airport is ready for commissioning in April-2021 Gov. Willie Obiano tells Aviation Minister Hadi Sirika on Tuesday 6 October.

Governor Willie Obiano of Anambra State will launch his Umueri international cargo airport project without fail in April 2021.

During his visit to President Buhari on 5 October, the Governor met with Aviation Minister where he broke the news.

Obiano told the Minister that the decision to embark on the airport project was informed by the need to cater to the economic interests of the state and its environs.

The Anambra Airport has the second longest runway in the country after MMIA Lagos, he disclosed.

Gov. Obiano said his government considered the strategic and economic importance of the airport before embarking on the project.

“The airport is just a few kilometres from Onitsha town, the economic nerve centre of the south-east region.

“It is strategically located and is a worthwhile investment, ” the governor further said.

The Minister agreed with the assessment because ”airports can be viable if they are built with specific objectives in mind.“

He said, for instance, that the airport could serve the interests of “the trading population of the state and environs.”

Obiano invited the minister to Anambra to commission the Airport in April 2021 as he was sure it would be ready in six months.

“We are sure of the date because we have the money to complete it.

“We are not asking for any assistance, neither are we taking any loans,” he declared with confidence.

The minister commissioned the rehabilitated Akanu Ibiam International Airport Enugu on 30 August.

The planned commissioning of Anambra airport will bring to three the number of airports in the South East.

Two more airports are also being planned for Ebonyi State by Gov. Dave Umahi and Abia by Gov. Okezie Ikpeazu.
