Ten APC governors from northern Nigeria today, 4 June, endorse a southern president to succeed President Muhammadu Buhari in 2023.

After eight years in power by the north, it’s good to allow 2023 presidency go south, they said in a jointly signed statement.

“The APC has a duty to ensure that the 2023 elections offer a nation-building moment, reaffirming that a democratic pathway to power exists for all who value cooperation and build national platforms.”

Accordingly, they proposed that a southerner be offered the APC ticket to contest the 2023 Presidential elections.

The governors believe this is the way for the APC to provide progressive leadership “amidst our national challenges.”

After eight years of President Buhari in power, this has become “a question of honour for APC (and) an obligation.”

“We affirm that upholding this principle is in the interest of building a stronger, more united and more progressive country.”

The governors said their resolution “is not in anyway affected by the decision of any other party.”

They welcomed President Buhari’s invitation to governors and stakeholders to allow a search for a suitable successor.

They therefore “strongly” recommended that APC’s search for Buhari’s successor … “be limited to … the southern states.”

Govs Bello Masari (Katsina), Abubakar Sani Bello (Niger), Abdullahi Sule (Nasarawa), and Umara Zulum (Borno) endorsed the resolution.

Others were Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai (Kaduna), Muhammad Yahaya (Gombe), Bello Matawalle (Zamfara), Simon Lalong (Plateau), and Umar Ganduje (Kano).

Gov Abubakar Atiku Bagudu (Kebbi) also co-signed, together with former Sokoto Governor Aliyu Wamako.

They appealed to northern aspirants to “withdraw in the national interest” and allow Southern aspirants to proceed to the primaries.”

Additionally, they congratulated Governor Abubakar Badaru of Jigawa State for setting the pace by “withdrawing his presidential aspiration.”

“The APC has a duty to ensure that the 2023 elections offer a nation-building moment, reaffirming that a democratic pathway to power exists for all who value cooperation and build national platforms.

“This moment calls for the most sober and inclusive approach to selecting our party’s candidate. We call on all APC leaders to fulfil their responsibility in this regard.”
