With 209 new cases, 7 deaths, and 11 recoveries reported two hours ago, the month of April 2020 has ended with a dismaying but largely expected spike in the number of confirmed cases of Covid-19 in Nigeria.

The month began with a total of 174 deaths counted since February 2020, nine full recoveries and two fatalities.

In the latest 30 April 2020 report released two hours ago by the Nigeria Centre for Disease control (NCDC), Kano State surged past Lagos State, accounting for almost 40 percent of reported cases.

The Kano result may have come from the fact that NCDC has scaled up its testing capacity in the State with yesterday’s opening of a second molecular testing laboratory at Bayero University.

The Agency now has 18 such laboratories nationwide.

The latest figures show steady increases in the number of cases recorded in the North East (Bauchi, Borno, Gombe) and North West (Kano, Sokoto) regions both of which account for more than half of the cases reported today nationwide.

The two regions are now threatening the numbers from Lagos and South West region, hitherto considered alongside FCT as the epicentres of the disease in Nigeria.

The South West Region’s numbers are usually boosted by Lagos and Ogun States.

No case was reported for the South East, the only region free from the virus tests released today.

A State-by-State allocation of confirmed cases show Kano taking the lead with 80 confirmed cases, followed by Lagos (45), Gombe (12), Bauchi (9), Sokoto (9), Borno (7), Edo (7), Rivers (6), and Ogun (6).

States that reported less than five cases each include FCT (4), Akwa Ibom (4), Bayelsa (4), Kaduna (3), Oyo (2) Delta (2), Nasarawa (2) Ondo (1), and Kebbi (1).
