Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) warns citizens about dangers of ongoing heatwave and the need to avoid its associated problems.

The Agency advises citizens to be vigilant to avoid dehydration, which could lead to fainting, chickenpox, measles, and heat rash.

Nigeria is experiencing extremely high temperature since last week. Officials say the temperature rose to 41°C in the North and 39°C in southern Nigeria.

It could climb higher in the north in the coming days, the Agency said in a tweet.

NiMet says citizens are already reporting body weakness, fever, dry lips, and respiratory issues.

NIMET advises citizens to be constantly rehydrated by taking adequate fluids.

“Seek shade, use fans, and wear light, breathable clothing to reduce exposure to high temperatures,” it said.

Citizens are also advised to avoid strenuous physical activity during peak heat hours. Instead, they are to stay indoors as much as possible, especially between 12:00 noon and 4:00 pm for as long as the high temperature persists, according to the agency.

About Heatwave

Heatwave is a period of abnormally high temperatures that persists for more than two days. The heat usually covers a large area, exposing a high number of people to hazards.

There are illnesses associated with heatwave, as NiMet noted in its advisory. Apart from humans, abnormally high temperatures also impact transportation, public utilities and agriculture.

In our homes, high temperatures increase electricity consumption from the use of fans, refrigerators and air conditioners. People drink a lot more water to remain hydrated because of the heat.
