In addition to its famous monastery, Awhum Community of Enugu State has two twin attractions – a waterfall and cave. Both require a walking exercise to reach from the community. Visitors go through a footpath that serves as the road to the natural facilities. They will cross two shallow streams to reach it.

The first site the visitor will see is the cave, a massive outgrowth of granite rock standing about 30 meters high. Water cascades from its top to form a stream below. Some believe that the water has magical powers. To get to the waterfall proper, visitors wade through the stream for about three minutes before they reach.

The Awhum waterfall is a warm spring and remains warm all year round.

Because of its reputation, the water is now a tourist and pilgrimage centre for people of Nigeria. Visitors come from far and near to experience its alleged healing powers and to exorcise evil spirits, although this is forbidden by the cave minders.

Consequently, the Awhum Waterfall and Cave has now become a destination for

  • Prayer and miracle center by both Christian and non-Christians.
  • Exhibitions and picnics
  • Camping
  • Tourism
  • Movie location
  • Unwind from the stresses of life

The nearby Monastery belonging to the Catholic Church – Our Lady of Mount Carmel – manages the cave.
