Bandits free four kidnapped Catholic nuns seized at the weekend on their way to a thanksgiving mass. Their abductors released the nuns unconditionally, a spokesperson said today, 23 August 2022, in a statement.

The Catholic faith sisters spent two days in the kidnappers den after their abduction last Sunday, 21 August 2022.

Spokesperson of the Sisters Of Jesus The Saviour (Generalate), Zita Ihedoro, announced their freedom today in Owerri, Imo State capital.

She emphasized that the nuns were freed unconditionally and thanked those who contributed to efforts to secure their release.

Highway bandits seized the sisters at the Okigwe-Umulolo axis of Enugu – Port Harcourt Expressway, now considered a black spot.

Sisters Johannes Nwodo, Christabel Echemazu, Liberata Mbamalu and Benita Agu were on their way to a colleague’s thanksgiving service when they ran into the bandits.

Sister Ihedoro statement reads as follows:

“With hearts full of joy, the Sisters of Jesus the Saviour wish to announce the unconditional and safe release of four of our sisters …

“Today is a memorable day for us. Therefore, we wish to share this joy with all men and women of goodwill who in one way or the other contributed to the quick and safe release of our dear sisters.

“We sincerely appreciate and thank you for your prayers and moral support during this difficult moment.

“May Jesus the Saviour whom we have come to serve bless, protect, and provide for you, especially in times of difficulty.”

Enugu Metro yesterday reported routine abductions of motorists, travelers, and villagers living along this route for ransom.
