President Muhammadu Buhari yesterday 19 November 2019 recognised the exemplary conduct of Ms. Josephine Ugwu, a Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria worker, and presented her with a house key as reward for her honesty and integrity.

Ms. Ugwu is one of two public servants that the President presented with Integrity Awards , the other being an assistant comptroller general in Customs, Mr. Bashir Abubakar.

The awards were made as the President opened a 2-day National Summit on Diminishing Corruption in Public Service organised by the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC).

Ms. Ugwu’s serial acts of selflessness and integrity reads like a fairy tale:

  • In 2006, Ugwu’s monthly salary was N12,000. Still, she found and returned over N10 million at the Enugu Airport where she was working as a cleaner.
  • In 2014, she found and returned N8 million at Lagos Airport.
  • In the same year, she found and returned N7 million at the same airport.
  • In 2015, she found and returned $12 million from the same airport.
  • In 2019 she found and returned N200,000 at the private wing of MMA.

Ms. Ugwu was not born with a silver spoon; she is the last of 12 children of her parents and she lost her mother at a tender 8-months.

She grew up having an uneasy life but she has proven herself over the years in her place of work as a woman of honesty and integrity.
