“It’s too early to begin to speculate whether this is real,” a medical personnel who saw the patient told us.

The medical community in Enugu was thrown into a frenzy yesterday, 14 March 2020, when a 69-year old woman who exhibited symptoms that resemble a Covid-19 virus infection was rushed into isolation.

The National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has tweeted that it is aware of the Enugu case but downplayed it as “one of several alerts” it receives each day.

The patient has been confined at one of the facilities belonging to the Enugu State University of Technology Teaching Hospital (Park Lane) in the Coal City.

A couple of medical personnel who saw the woman told us that the lady in question went to visit family members in London, England, and stayed with them for six months, only to return with symptoms similar to those of Covid-19 virus infection.

eMetro News gathered that several samples of her body fluid have been taken and rushed to national laboratories in both Abuja and Lagos, to confirm whether it is the virus that is causing the symptoms or something else.

“It’s too early to begin to speculate,” one of the medical personnel we spoke to, who saw the patient at her isolation facility, told us.

Results of the test from Lagos and Abuja are expected between today Sunday and Monday 16 March, she said.

eMetro News was told that the family of the patient had been “extremely compliant and cooperative, despite the shock and the trauma that comes with isolation.”

On its part, the Enugu State Government, we also learnt, has fully activated the medical emergency procedures that it uses to deal with epidemics, including those used for the Ebola outbreak and the perennial Lassa Fever.

Nigeria has been officially certified as free from coronavirus, following the negative test of the second case reported in Ogun State. She will return to status quo if this case is eventually confirmed.

The index case – the Italian from Milan – is reported to be stable and doctors are expected to make a final determinaton whether to also release him to society by next week.
