Covid-19 infects 187 health workers and 15 NYSC members who serve in the State Enugu State Govt announces today.

The number of health workers infected in Enugu has tripled since government first raised an alarm six months ago.

All infected youth cor are active cases from serving youths, Health Commissioner, Dr. Emmanuel Ikechukwu Obi, said

Enugu State, he said, recorded 1,372 cases of COVID- 19 since the outbreak, out of which 96 percent was successfully managed.

A total of 21 persons died, he said, while 30 patients are currently being managed at designated hospital locations.

Obi said Enugu state is announcing these figures to remind citizens that Covid-19 is still here and wreaking havoc.

Christmas holiday makers

The Health Ministry plans to contain a possible surge from Christmas holiday makers streaming into Enugu.

“We have strong arrangement … to take care of those coming in for Christmas, through the air and land transport.

“We also have rapid response teams in all LGAs.

“Our contact tracers are always at alert to move in and trace patient’s contacts, accordingly.”

Enugu has sample collection centres in every LGA, including an extra seven donated by UNICEF to the Ministry, he said.

He disclosed that Covid-19 infections are being reported in 15 out of the 17 local government areas of the state.

Dr Obi appealed to residents to continue observing official COVID- 19 protocols such as

  • wearing of face mask,
  • observing social distancing, and
  • washing hands regularly with water and soap

Enugu is currently sitting at No. 12 position on national Covid-19 infections table as presented by the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC).

It is the the State with most infections in the South East, followed by Ebonyi (16th), Abia (17th), Imo (21st) and Anambra (30th).
