The Group Managing Director of the NNPC, Mallam Mele Kyari, says his corporation is not bothered about the current outcry over litre price of kerosene because government has decided on a different approach to deal with the issue once and for all.
The strategy involves the gradual phasing away of kerosene as a fuel for cooking and its replacement with cooking gas (LPG).
The Corporation’s focus, he said in a television interview, is to migrate all those who are still using kerosene for domestic cooking to the use of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), which is popularly referred to as cooking gas.
He said that apart from the fact that LPG is a cheaper fuel than kerosene, it is also safer and more environment friendly.
He disclosed that the Minister of State for Petroleum, Chief Timipre Sylva, is already championing the campaign to switch to LPG from kerosene through policies to deepen their acceptance and use,.
Adoption of LPG usage is the best solution to kerosene supply challenges in the country, he declared.
