TUC Enugu Chapter

Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) was registered as a Labour Centre on 8 August 2005. The journey to registration began on 24 April 1980 when the Federation of Senior Staff Associations of Nigeria (FESSAN) was formed at the 1st Delegates Conference of Senior Staff Unions held at Federal Palace Hotel, Lagos. On 24 April 1986, the NEC of FESSAN voted to change the name to Senior Staff Consultative Association of Nigeria (SESCAN). The journey eventually ended in 2005 when TUC received government recognition as a Labour Centre.

The desire to form a senior staff labour centre grew from the work of Michael Abiodun Commission, set up in 1976 to sanitise and rationalize the labour climate in Nigeria. At the conclusion of their work, government pruned hundreds of industrial unions to 42, separated senior staff associations from unions, and created four professional and nine employer associations. The last straw was when the decree resulting from the work of the Commission created a single Labour Centre for the 42 recognized unions, effectively excluding senior staff from recognised unions. TUC successfully weathered the storms of resistance from both government and the existing Labour Centre to actualize the dream of becoming a labour centre in 2005.
