Enugu State Government bulldozers roared into Emene this morning to demolish buildings and structures adjudged to be encroaching on Akanu Ibiam International Airport land, an action that puts paid to speculations that unnamed persons were demanding compensation from contractors currently engaged in rehabilitation works at the airport.

Chairman of Enugu Capital Territory Development Authority, Hon. Josef Onoh, told newsmen that the demolition exercise will further enhance safety and security of lives and property at the airport.

With this demolition, the state government has now completely addressed the three-pronged demand of federal authorities, including relocation of Emene Market and abattoir, relocation of state-government radio mast, and removal of structures that encroach on airport land.

Officials of the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) joined top state government officials to witness the exercise which Mr. Onoh said is in direct response to safety concerns raised by the federal authorities on the airport.

With this demolition, the state government has now completely addressed the three-pronged demand of federal authorities, including relocation of Emene Market and abattoir, relocation of state-government radio mast, and removal of structures that encroach on airport land.

The Aviation Minister, on his own was tweeting yesterday about the extent of work done at the airport.

The State Commissioner of Information, Mr. Chidi Aroh, who was on the entourage said that the demolition will create space for installation of night landing lights at the airport by the contractors.

He recalled that the State Government approved and handed over to FAAN a certificate of occupancy for all land at the airport site, which gives the agency an open cheque to take whatever they need to make the airport an international hub.

“Every land acquired by FAAN is acquired by the state in line with extant laws and we are providing all the necessary support for this airport to be operational.

“We have received assurances from the contractors and from FAAN that this airport will be re-opened for operations in April.

“We are therefore going to continue to put in the best of our efforts to ensure that the directives of the State Executive Council regarding the airport are carried out,” Aroh said.
