The Nigeria Postal Service (NPS) is yet to establish Awka township postal codes in Anambra State. This is because at the time the NPS implemented the current codes, Awka City was essentially a rural community.
This is quite unlike Enugu City, capital of the old State from where Anambra was carved out.
Awka is the name of a town as well as a local government that was subsequently split into two.
Awka was named as State Capital for the new Anambra State on 27 August 1991. It will therefore celebrate its 30th anniversary, same as the State, in three months’ time, 27 August 2021.
Awka Local Government was split into two, Awka North and South, each of which comprised of nine old communities apiece. All of the 18 communities in the two local governments have separate postal codes.
The Anambra State Government has since split these communities further into several autonomous communities, which are also not captured in the existing postal codes.
