Geometric Power, Nigeria’s first private power company, is set for commissioning in February 2024, an official said.

The company installed four brand new power transformers and refurbished three old ones to ensure quality and constant power supply. It also mounted tubular poles, similar to what obtains in western cities, to withstand natural calamities.

An Executive Director, Engr. Ben Caven, told visiting students that Abia will witness steady power supply from the 188MW power plant.

Over 150 electrical and electronics students of Michael Okpara Federal University of Agriculture at Umudike in Abia State visited the plant.

The promise of steady power comes from the heavy investments the company has made in a robust infrastructure, Caven said.

“Geometric Power will make a fundamental difference in electricity delivery because of its insistence on using world-class electricity infrastructure.

“All turbines installed at the power plant are from General Electric, the world’s leader in electricity equipment manufacturing, despite the cost.

“Most other firms could have gone for less costly machines after all the customer revenue will be collected in the local naira currency.”

The company installed four brand new power transformers and refurbished three old ones to ensure quality and constant power supply. It also mounted tubular poles, similar to what obtains in western cities, to withstand natural calamities.

“Though our tubular poles are high so that they cannot easily be fouled by trees and vehicles which cause electricity blackouts, each of them is buried about 10 metres in the ground.”

“We also provided 150,000 kilometres of brand new overhead wires and cables in these LGAs, all from indigenous companies which manufacture better wires and cables.

“We are confident that power outages and load shedding will become history in the area once the Geometric Power thermal plant is commissioned,” he stated.

The Geometric group is licensed to generate and distribute power to 17 local governments in Abia from the gas-powered plant located at Osisioma Industrial Area of Aba in Abia State.

The planned commissioning of Geometric power will bring to an end the issues that have dogged its take-off since it was licenced over a decade ago.
