Gov. Willie Obiano of Anambra State dethrones 3 of the 12 Igwes (traditional rulers) he suspended on 11 August and pardons five others.

Those given the boot include Igwe Chijioke Nwankwo (Nawfia), Igwe Anthony Onyekwere (Owelle) and Igwe G. B. C. Mbakwe (Abacha).

Greg Obi, Commissioner in charge of Chietaincy Affairs, announced the decision to sack them today 18 December 2020.

The trio were given one month to return their certificates of recognition to their respective Local Government Area Council Secretaries.

The Governor however pardoned Igwes Simon Chidibem (Umumbo), AN Onwuneme (Ikenga), Mark Anthony Okonkwo (Alor), Chukwuma Orji(Ezinifite) and SO Obiora(Ezira).

The case against three others natural rulers are still being reviewed, the Commissioner said in his statement dated 17 December.

The three will remain suspended and they include Kelly Nkeli (Igbariam), Dr Emeka Iluno (Ifitedunu) and Peter Uyanwa (Ukwulu).

They are also forbidden to hold court as Igwes in their domains and perform official functions within and outside the state.

The statement, quoted by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), was silent on the fate of Igwe Alex Edozieuno of Mkpunando who was on the list.

The 12 rulers were suspended on 11 August 2020 for travelling out of their domain without the Governor’s permission.

This was in the heat of a powerplay between the Governor and an APC opposition party financier, Chief Arthur Eze.

The rulers were accused of being bankrolled by Chief Eze to visit President Buhari with a petition against the Governor.
