Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, declares Bola Ahmed Tinubu of All Progressives Congress winner of 25 February 2023 presidential elections.

Agency chairman Yakubu Mahmood made the declaration early this morning, 1st March 2023 at the International Conference Centre Abuja.

He has been announcing the candidates performance piecemeal at the venue he chose as National Collation Centre.

Mahmood announced that Tinubu met the stipulated requirements, including winning the majority votes cast to emerge the winner.

Interestingly, all the candidates won 12 of the 36 states apiece, with Labour Candidate Peter Obi topping the number by winning the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

INEC’s announcement however placed him third on the ballot with 6.1 million votes.

The numbers announced for Tinubu was 8.7 million votes, followed by Atiku Abubakar (PDP) with 6.9 million votes.

Opposition rejects result

However, in anticipation of the announcement, opposition parties staged a walk out at the Centre on Monday and demanded that INEC cancel the results.

The election was marred by several irregularities including shoddy preparation, voter intimidation, voter suppression, and tampering of voter results by INEC staff. Many of the return sheets that the agency posted online showed clear mutilations and imposition of figures after erasure of original figures.

Elections failed to hold in several places due to late arrival of officials and voting materials, violence, and malfunctioning of the voter capture machine, aka BIVAS.

Consequently, these logistical challenges forced the electoral body to continue with voting the following day, Sunday.

Opposition candidates have since Monday vowed to challenge the result in the courts.
