Veteran actor and New Masquerade star Natty (Romanus Amuta) dies, aged 79, his family has announced.

The veteran actor who played the role of Natty in the hilarious soap, died yesterday 9 February. His son, Chukwuma, confirmed news of his transition to a news  agency reporter.

Chukwuma also disclosed that his father died in Lagos after a protracted illness.

Late Amuta was from Ukana town in Udi Local Government Area of Enugu State.

He has joined a growing list of actors of the iconic sitcom who have passed The show dominated the airwaves in the 1980s.

Amuta’s life and Time

Amuta began his career in the print media, working in the Daily Times newspaper before going into acting.

He had his break when he made the cast of the News Masquerade, a long-running sitcom broadcast on Nigeria Television Authority (NTA).

The sitcom featured the daily escapades of the sidesplitting traditional Igbo Chief, Zebrudaya Nwogbo, and his hilarious struggles with English.

Chief Zebrudaya turned his handicap in the use of English into a quaint and expressive pastime that wowed audiences nationwide.

In the series, Natty was the perpetually hungry neighbor with an uncanny gift for appearing whenever a meal is served.

He appeared briefly in Nollywood flicks such as ‘Lion Finger’ (2003), ‘Eagles Bride’ (2005) and ‘Ijele’ (1999).

He battled with ill-health since 2009 when he reportedly suffered a stroke.

A wife, Cordelia, and six children surive the actor.
