OLMC – Our Lady of Mount Camel – Monastery, Awhum is a member of the Catholic Order of Cistercians of the Strict Observance. It is located at Awhum, Ezeagu LGA of Enugu State, Nigeria. The Monastert is about 29 kilometers north of Enugu City.
Fr. Abraham Ojefua founded the Monastery in 1970 and incorporated into the Order of Cistercians on 2 July 1978. It became an Abbey on 15 February 2006.
OLMC is an Abbey for monks, affiliated to the Order of Cistercians, one of the oldest orders which was founded in 1098. Generally, monks dedicate their lives to serving people and God. Most are ascetics, voluntarily choosing to leave mainstream society to live a secluded life in prayer and contemplation. The Cistercians state that, “Our lives are dedicated to seeking union with God, through Jesus Christ, in a community of sisters or brothers.”
The current Superior of the Awhum Abbey is Dom Kevin Onyima (since 2022).
Commonly known as Awhum Monastery, the Church designates Ahwum Monastery as an Abbey in the Enugu Diocese of the Catholic Church.
