The Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) and a couple of other opposition parties yesterday concluded their party primaries for nomination of chairmanship and councillorship candidates for the forthcoming Enugu State Local Government Elections which will hold on Saturday 29 February 2020 across the 17 local council areas of the state.

According to the timetable released by ENSIEC, parties have between 15 January and today, 22 January 2020, to submit their plans and time tables for primaries to the electoral body.

The parties are therefore expected to hold the primaries and thereafter submit list of nominated council chairmanship and councillorship candidates to ENSIEC between next week Wednesday to the end of January 2020.

However, eMetro News reports monitored from the 17 local governments show that the parties are not taking anything to chance, with most of them conducting the primaries at the weekend.

The PDP primaries in particular have been smooth sailing, since the party had carried out extensive in-house consultations that led to the emergence of consensus candidates.

Except for Nsukka Local Government Area where party chiefs are opposing the return of former chairman, Patrick Omeje, most local government party faithful have largely accepted suggestions of the State Govermet on who to field as a candidate.

According to a PDP top official who is privy to the decision making process in the party, “the Governor had assisted us local politicians in the grassroots through the consultation exercise that took place at Lion Building.”

Responding the suggestions that the PDP was imposing candidates, the Party executive who did not want his name mentioned because he is not authorized to speak on the subject, told eMetro News that, in some cases, the names suggested were rejected and had to be substituted with those the members considered as true members who had “suffered for the party.”

He cited the example of Enugu South LGA where the candidate that the “godfathers” suggested to the Governor was roundly rejected by the people present at the consultation.

“The Governor was forced to enter into negotiations that led to the emergence of Hon. Monday Eneh, former party chairman, as the consensus candidate,” he said.

The main opposition party in Enugu State, the All Progressives Congress (APC) appears to have been caught flat-footed as a result of internal wrangling tearing the party apart.

Although the party is said to be selling participation forms to aspirants, an official told eMetro News that the party is “disabled” because of the leadership disputes which have split APC Enugu State Chapter into two factions, each claiming to be the legally constituted body.

“Things are not working well for us,” he lamented.

From all indications therefore, the only force that appears to constitute a threat to the PDP is a group of young men and activists who have decided to mount a stout challenge “against the old order.”

Among them is the activist and lawyer, Chinonso Ogbe, the leader of the African Progressive Party (APA) in the state who has decided to throw his hat into the ring as a chairmanship contestant.

Ogbe easily won nomination yesterday as the Chairmanship candidate of APA for Enugu South and is confident of victory against Hon. Eneh when they both meet at the polls on 29 February.

Names of PDP candidates that won their nominations yesterday, and which have been circulated in the social media for a while now, include the following:
