Nigerian parents are being encouraged by the Police to also consider putting their children through Taekwondo training, a martial arts sport, as a safety measure in an increasingly criminal and violent environment.

The benefits of the game for child upbringing and safety, he said, flows from “the tenets of the game which include integrity, survival skills, self-control, perseverance, hard work, honesty, and self-defense, among others.”

CSP Ebere Amaraizu

Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) Ebere Lawrence Amaraizu, who is chairman of Taekwondo Association in Enugu State, gave the advice on Saturday, 1 February 2020, at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Stadium where he went to watch a children Taekwondo training session.

“Taekwondo is a tool to be used for child development and safety,” he said.

The benefits of the game for child upbringing and safety, he said, flows from “the tenets of the game which include integrity, survival skills, self-control, perseverance, hard work, honesty, and self-defense, among others.”

Amaraizu is also national coordinator of Police Campaign Against Cultism and Other Vices (POCACOV), an initiative of current Inspector General Mohammed Abubakar Adamu to fight cultism in schools and in society.

He spoke about the collaboration taking place between the police and public agencies in Enugu, including Youth and Sports Ministry as well as educational institutions, which is aimed at infusing the messages of Taekwondo and POCACOV to children living in Enugu State.

The objective of this collaboration, he said, is “to catch them young, prevent them from the influence of bad associates, and allow them to discover their sporting potentials.”

He appreciated the taekwondo trainers for the commitment to the children, which has seen a leap in the number of kids registering for the exercise.

Taekwondo is a Korean martial art, characterized by its emphasis on head-height kicks, jumping and spinning kicks, and fast kicking techniques. It is a combative sport developed during the 1940s and 1950s by Korean martial artists with experience in Chinese martial arts who wanted to create something indigenous to their own culture.
