Rangers International football club at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium Enugu, defeated visiting Sunshine Stars of Akure 1-0 in rescheduled Matchday 1 of Nigeria Professional Football League played on Thursday, 14 November, 2019.

The match which began by 4.00 p.m. was a rescheduled professional league encounter.

Enugu Rangers and Enyimba FC of Aba – both playing continental matches, benefitted from the postponement by the League Management Company.

Enyimba was to play both Nassarawa United while Akwa United was to take on Abia Warriors.

Kabiru Dogo’s boys from Akure actually gave the Rangers a good fight, especially as they faced inexperienced and match-rusty new players fielded by Coach Benedict Ugwu.

Ugwu rested most of the continental players and pushed forward Seka Pascal(Chinonso Eziekwe), Nnamdi Egbujuo and Dauda Madaki(Ibrahim Olawoyin) in the attack, Godspower Aniefiok(Akpos Adubi), Ugochukwu Ugwuoke and Tony Shimaga at the midfield, and Chidera Ezeh, Chiemeka Nwokeji, Uche John and Isiaka Oladuntoye controlling the defence line while Saidu Muktawakilu was at the goal post.

Rangers missed some goal scoring chances in the first half but came back in the second half more determined and focused to get her maximum three points from Sunshine Stars of Akure.

As a result, there was so much pressure on their opponent’s goal mouth area.

Eventually, Ugochukwu Ugwuoke dribbled the defenceline before making way for on rushing Nnamdi Egbujuo to find the net in the 58th minute of play.

Coach Dabiru Dogo of Sunshine Stars said that he is still assembling his team.

“If I go back to Akure, I may need to add some new players who are training into the team”.

He further congratulated Coach Benedict Ugwu for the victory and wished Rangers well in her Continental engagement.

Coach Benedict Ugwu on the other hand also confirmed that match rustiness and late commencement of the League is telling on the team and pleaded with Rangers fans to “have patience with the few number of goals scored. Though a win is a win, the most important is the three points’.
