The National Population Commission maintains an office in Enugu City, which is located at 7 Ridgeway in the GRA. The office is headed by a State Director who is the administrative head and has four principal departments - Technical Unit, Vital Registration, Human Resource, and Management and Public Affairs. There are also local government area offices headed by Comptrollers.
The National Population Commission (NPC) was established by the 1979 Constitution, suspended by the military on 31 December 1983 but reestablished by Decree in 1989. The decree was subsequently verified by the National Assembly in 2004 as the National Population Act, CAP – No_67, (LFN) 2004. It’s establishment and functions are specified in the 1999 Constitution under Section 153 (J). The Commission collects, analyzes, and disseminates population and housing data.
It’s full functions are to undertake periodic enumeration of the population and housing, register births and deaths, publish data on migration, maintain a population data bank, and keep the public informed about its functions.
