Rangers International football club of Enugu slipped further down the League table yesterday as it succumbed with a late own goal to Rivers United FC in Port Harcourt.

The Coal City favourites lost 1-2 to their host, Rivers United Football Club, in Matchday 4 of Nigeria Professional Football League.

The referee for the match was Nura Abubakar from Bauchi State.

Rangers paraded Saidu Muktawakilu on goal keeping duty, protected by Tope Olusesi, Isaac Loute, Isiaka Oladuntoye and Akpos Adubi in defence line.

Rangers midfield was manned by Tony Shimaga, Ikechukwu Ibenegbu (replaced by Ibrahim Olawoyin in the 40th minute), Kehinde Adedipe (Ifeanyi George 45′) and Chiamaka Madu.

Rangers attack featured Godspower Aniefiok and Sadick Abass (Chinonso Eziekwe 67′).

The first goal was scored through penalty in 34th minutes after Rangers goalkeeper was adjudged to have wrongly tackled Rivers attacker Cletus Emotan in the box.

Rivers United led with the lone goal to the end of first half.

Rangers equalled the score line in 56th minutes with a superb strike by Ibrahim Olawoyin.

However, in the 75th minutes of play, Akpos Adubi performed a disatrous header meant for the Rangers goalkeeper but which found the net for an own goal, credited to Malachi Ohawume, the last Rivers player with the ball.

Rangers Team Manager, Amobi Ezeaku, said it was “quite unfortunate that we lost this game, but that is football.”

Rangers maintains its previous 4 points as it slipped down to the 11th position out of 20 teams.

Rangers will meet Akwa Starlets for her next match this Sunday, 24 November at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium Enugu, by 4.00p.m.
