Several news outlets reported that retired police chief, retired Inspector General Mustafa “Tafa” Balogun, is dead, aged 75.

Sources told newsmen that the former police chief died yesterday, 4 August 2022, just four days to his 75th birthday.

His family is yet to announce his departure and possible cause of death.

A brilliant police officer, Balogun served as the 21st police inspector general from March 2002 to 2006

He was born on 8 August 1947 Ila-Orangun in Osun State. He enrolled in the Force as a member of cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Course 3.

Balogun served as principal staff officer to Muhammadu Gambo Jimeta, deputy commissioner in Edo State, and Commissioner in Delta, Rivers, and Abia States.

He also headed Zone 1, Kano as assistant inspector general before jumping two steps to Inspector General in 2002.

Corruption allegations unfortunately marred his tenure and eventually forced him to resign the office in 2004.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) subsequently charged Balogun to court in April 2005. In court filings, EFCC claimed that Balogun laundered over $100 million police funds during his term as inspector general. Balogun made a plea bargain which saw him returning much of the property and funds and serving a six-month sentence as well.
