CBSJ, the Career Boost for Student Journalists (CBSJ) Programme, helps Nigerian student journalists to hone their writing, reporting and presentation skills. Through the programme, participants build a rich resume that will earn them easy entry into media newsrooms in Nigeria.

No one asks journalism applicants for evidence of previous work experience before hiring them to report news or write features. Editors only need to see their writing samples. The best samples are those published in established media with their bylines. Through the CB-SJ Programme, Enugu Metro accepts well-investigated stories from Nigerian journalism students in for publication with their bylines, to assist them jumpstart their careers from school.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who can apply for the programme?

The CBSJ Programme is a collaboration between Journalism Schools and Enugu Metro. Lecturers who teach the relevant courses coordinate such collaborations.

Students from schools that are not in the programme can independently apply to join the programme.

How does it work?

Participating students go into the community to cover events, dig for news stories and research for features. Participating schools send their best student works for further editing to conform to the house style and publication. Others send their directly to the editor for review and publication

Do you pay students for articles published in Enugu Metro?

No and Yes. We do not pay students for investigation and publication of their stories in Enugu Metro. The goal is to assist them build up a resume that makes it easy to find journalism jobs after school.

At the same time, every quarterly, the Editors review the best three works from the students and submit to a committee that decides the form of awards/prizes to give to their creators.

Are there other incentives?

For students that prove reliable, consistent, and the willingness to learn and improve, the Editors occasionally reward them with sponsored events coverage opportunities. We pay a stipend to cover the cost of transportation and an honorarium for writing a great story from the event.
