Contrary to insinuations, the Buhari administration joined those who pleaded for the Ekweremadus during their UK trial for organ harvesting.

This fact became obvious from the sentencing speech of Mr Justice Johnson, the judge who sent the Ekweremadus to jail yesterday

Justice Johnson specifically mentioned the government as one of those who attested to the good character of Sen Ike Ekweremadu

Those he mentioned included the the Attorney General, the Senate President, and the Speaker of the House of Representatives.

Other character witnesses include the Anglican Archbishop of Enugu, Bishop Emmanuel Chukwuma, beneficiaries of the Ikeoha Foundation, and the impassioned plea of Sonia, the daughter.

Sky News London noted that Sonia wept in court as the judge read the sentences.

She had previously told the BBC that she feels “guilty” that her parents are going to jail for her sake.

Sen Ekweremadu, his wife Beathrice and a medical doctor, Obinna Obeta, were sentenced to between ten and six years yesterday.

The pleas however led to mitigated sentences of between six and two years.
