Enugu’s Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, takes a dig at Sen Ike Ekweremadu, questioning his bona fide claims to the governorship.

The Punch newspaper quoted a State Government spokesperson who dismissed the ranking Senator’s declaration as inconsequential.
Gov Ugwuanyi’s Adviser on Information, Mr. Steve Oruruo, said it was “normal for politicians nursing various ambitions to make spurious claims about their capacity or influence.”
He described the no-zoning advocates as “overzealous politicians” embarking on “needless arguments to “heat up the polity in Enugu State.”
Oruruo further implied that no-zoning advocates wish to destailize the Enugu State Government but will fail in their bid.
“It is possible that some people want to destabilise the government in Enugu State. But as you can see, our peace-loving governor has maintained his focus.”
He said the Governor wants “peace and harmonious social co-existence” and therefore refrains from joining issues” with those “stoking misunderstanding.”
Zoning and Enugu
Oruruo gave three reasons why the Governor favours zoning.
“Notable leaders … have spoken and the situation is clear that zoning exists and must continue to exist in the state.”
Mr. Oruruo said the governor suppports the elders, noting further that zoning is in the PDP constitution.
Finally, he said the governor was persuaded by the fact that the position has been rotating among Enugu’s senatorial zones.
“The power-sharing arrangement was not the making of Governor Ugwuanyi, but that of the founding fathers of the state.”
It was easy to identify Sen Ekweremadu as the target of the Governor’s attack. The Enugu West ranking Senator is the only politician that has so far publicly declared interest in the governorship race. He also questions the zoning claims as an elite argument for those seeking to grab power.
