The National Open University of Nigeria in Enugu, is an online study institution. It provides functional, flexible, accessible, cost-effective education for working people. It also serves those unable to afford the high cost of a brick and mortar university in Nigeria. President Shehu Shagari established the university in July 1983. Alhaji Shagari envisioned "a university with capacity to admit and meet the education and skill needs of citizens. Their status and circumstances did not matter. His government realized that a sustainable democracy, functional economy, happy and prosperous people, all depend on knowledgeable citizens. The government was also aware that existing higher institutions did not have the capacity to meet the educational needs of such citizens in a highly populous country like' Nigeria.
The National Open University of Nigeria maintains a study centre called the Enugu Study Centre (Code: 012).
