The Enugu State Government votes N320million as emergency funds for a potential fight against the outbreak of Covid-19 in the State.

The funds were approved by the State Executive Council at its meeting today, according to the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health, Dr. Ifeanyi Agujiobi, who briefed newsmen on the level of preparations by the State in the event of an outbreak of the virus in the State.

Dr. Agujiobi said N150million of the funds will be utilized immediately to relocate and equip a modern isolation centre while N80m will be used to procure essential drugs needed not only for Covid-19 but also for Lassa fever and other communicable diseases.

In addition to the relocation, the funds will also be used to procure “more personal protective equipment, sanitizers, masks, respirators and all that are needed to aid the physicians manage their patients.”

It will also pay for procurement of full-fitted ambulances and incident vehicles to help respond to emergencies as they may arise, as well mass advocacy and enlightenment in every nook and cranny of the state, churches, markets and schools,” he said.

Dr. Ifeanyi Agujiobi, who heads the Government Emergency Response Team on the virus threat, said the balance of N100m would be used by his team for quick response to any other emergencies, without having to go cap in hand to the State Executive Council for more money.

He disclosed that the decision to relocate the isolation centre to the hospital was done on the advice of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), and in order to achieve prompt and effective emergency response.

“The relocation will be more convenient, easier for patients who may have Coronavirus or suspected to have Coronavirus to be attended to by medical specialists promptly and timely, including patient access to X-Ray machines, the dialysis machine and other high tech machines domiciled in the Teaching hospital”. 

Said he: “In a couple of hours, all the radio stations in Enugu will be agog with jingles and everything that we need to know regarding the Coronavirus.”

He also added that the Council equally approved that funds be made available so that the health workers will have the requisite training and pursue contact tracing of those who may be suspected or may turn out to be positive, “so that we don’t need to have anything lacking.”
