…today would have been his 20th anniversary in the priesthood

The Catholic Diocese of Enugu has concluded arrangements to bury its slain priest, Rev. Fr. Paul Chidi Offu, on Tuesday 20 August 2019.

Fr. Offu (49), the Parish Priest at St. James the Greater Catholic Church, Ugbawka, in Nkanu West LGA of Enugu State, was murdered in cold blood on 1 August 2019 by yet to be identified gunmen along the Ihe-Agbudu road in Awgu LGA of the State.

He would have celebrated his 20th anniversary as a priest today 14 August, having been ordained on the same date in 1999.

A week-long schedule of activities will kick off on Monday 19 August when his remains will be conveyed to his home town of Okpatu, to make a brief stopover at his compound before proceeding to his home parish, Holy Family Church for a requiem mass.

The Reverend’s remains will also be taken to his parish at Ugbawka for a vigil mass before it returns to Enugu for interment at the Holy Ghost Cathedral, Enugu.

Fr. Offu was on his way to visit a mentor-priest when he ran into an ambush by bandits that have been kidnapping people along the route. Although he braved their bullets and powered past them in his van, the hoodlums gave a hot chase and shot him dead for daring to not stop when they greeted his car with their assault weapons.

Ugwuanyi visits crime scene

Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi on Monday 12 August visited the crime scene at Agbudu as well as the Ihe-Ogbaku axis of the Enugu-Port Harcourt Expressway where a monarch and his wife were abducted a few days later.

He expressed satisfaction with the security arrangements being put in place by the army to stem the spate of attacks on the highwaythe Awgu LGA black spot where a priest was killed and a monarch abducted in recent times.

From Ihe to Ogbaku and finally to Agbudu towns, the governor inspected the army post, spoke with youths clearing the bushes around the black spot on the Enugu-Port Harcourt Expressway, and finally had a word for the crack team of crime busters deployed from Force Headquarters in Abuja.

An army post has sprung up along the expressway where the hoodlums operated and the bushes around the area have been cleared.

The Governor told both the army and the police that he is determined to ensure that no criminal is found in Awgu and that they should “deal ruthlessly” with any criminal caught kidnapping or robbing people along the Expressway.
