Abia State Governor Alex Otti expands the major entry road to the State capital Umuahia into a six-lane highway.

Gov Alex Otti flagged off the 3.5 kilometers Ossah-Okpara Square Road, yesterday.

The flag off took place at the Okpara Square end of the road. He promised to extend the reconstruction and expansion to Onuimo the Imo River boundary town.

The road contract, awarded to Craneburg Construction Company comes with standard drainage system, solar-powered street lights and walk way.

Gov Otti hoped that the road will unlock the economic potentials of Umuahia as well as open up the city to greater economic opportunities.

Paying compensation

Gov Otti said government began paying compensation to owners of 130 structures marked for demolition to make way for the road expansion.

Those yet to receive theirs were asked to be patient as the delay could be from their banks.

“Money meant for compensation had been provided,” he said.

He also explained government delayed commencement of the project to allow payment of compensation to owners of affected structures.

Government plans to carry out a similar construction on the Imo River-Umuikaa-Obikabia-Umuene- Ukaegbu Road to Ikot Ekpene Road in Aba. This will provide alternative corridor into Akwa Ibom State and decongest Aba, the commercial capital of Abia.
