What Archbishop Emmanuel Chukwuma of the Anglican Dominion said yesterday in Enugu was that he is not Obi-dient.

However, in a review of a video footage where he made the declaration, he made no direct reference to Mr. Peter Obi and his presidential aspiration. Instead, he devoted his entire tirade on those aspiring to become governor of the State.

On this, he also did not hide his preference for Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate, Mr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah.

The Archbishop made his controversial declaration yesterday 12 August at the burial of former military governor, Col. Anthony Obi, in Akpugo, Nkanu West LGA of Enugu State.

He did not mention Peter Obi nor any other national candidate. Rather, his speech concentrated on the State elections and his preference for PDP candidate, Mr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah.

Here is a transcription of the statement

The controversial video

For the recalcitrant, let me tell everyone that in Enugu State, we’re not Obi-dient.

“I’m not Obidient in Enugu State. I’m under umbrella. (Umbrella is the logo of the Peoples Democratic Party).

“I’m not saying that others are no good but the parties in Nigeria must go and refine themselves and the personalities that are coming in.

“I don’t know the manifestos of the candidates, but I address my message to Ndubuisi (Mbah) and to all other candidates ….”

Peter Ndubuisi Mbah is the PDP governorship candidate for Enugu

“I pray that when all of you come out (when campaigns begin), you’ll tell us your manifestos. Then we shall know who is who.”

“I’m saying that I know you very well, Ndubuisi, right from when you were chief of staff (to Gov Nnamani).

“I know you and I know what you do. You have legitimate source of income, and you have resources to vie for governorship without stressing anybody.

So, carry on. When others come, we shall ask them what they are doing? We shall then appraise everything to know where we are going.

“But for now, I’m not Obi-dient; I better make that clear now.”

“Are you listening? We want those who will come to make Nigeria better, Enugu State to be better. The time has gone that people will turn to opposition to come and grab.

“I’ve not become partisan but I’m telling you the truth about life. May God forgive us and save us in Jesus’ name.”

Crack in Enugu East District

What Archbishop Chukwuma said may also be understood as a rejection of Labour Party candidate in the State, Chief Chijioke Edeoga.

It also exposed the crack in Enugu East District from where all governorship candidates were selected.

PDP political heavyweights of the District, including Chief Jim Nwobodo and Sen. Chimaroke Nnamani, favour Mr. Mbah.

However, their victory calculations got jeopardized with the entry of Edeoga in the Labour Party, which is enjoying unprecedented youth support.

Edeoga is also believed to be in the good books of Enugu North District where Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi comes from.

Ugwuanyi was said to have angered his district by directing party delegates to vote for Mbah rather than their favorite.

It is not clear yet if the governor’s decision will lead him to fail in his ambition to represent the district at the Senate in 2023.
