Unknown gunmen targeting South-East police formations returned in the early hours of this morning to attack an Enugu Police Station.

They targeted the Adani Police Station in Uzo-Uwani LGA, according to a statement from the Enugu State Police Command.

Two policemen were killed by the marauders who also set ablaze the Adani station and its operational vehicles, Ndukwe said in a statement.

The police showed alertness and fought back bravely, thereby frustrating their plans to cart away arms and armunition..

Police spokesperson, Daniel Ndukwe, an Assistant Superintendent, said the violent attack and arson took place at about 2.30 a.m.

Ndukwe said the fierce gun battle left many of the criminals wounded as they escaped.

“Unfortunately, two policemen were critically wounded and later confirmed dead in the hospital,’’ he added.

Enugu State Police Commissioner Mohammed Aliyu visited the scene of the battle earlier today, accompanied by heads of other federal security agencies in the state.

Mr. Aliyu ordered reinforcement of operational and intelligence resources to immediately track and arrest the killers.

The public as well as heads of medical facilities in the State were asked to assist in the manhunt by reporting anyone suspected to have gunshot injuries.

He also sympathized with families of the two policemen killed in the line of duty.

Unknown gunmen have since January this year made the rounds of police formations in the five south eastern states.

Enugu has been spared in the spate of gunmen attack on police stations in the South East since January, until this morning.

Enugu Metro has however reported that the attacks on police stations began in the Coal City State in August 2020.

In lightening operations, Railway Police Station Ogui and Unity Police Station Abakpa, both in the City of Enugu, were assaulted.

There were no casualties, but the gunmen reportedly broke into the armory and took away guns and bullets.
