Gov Ndubuisi Mbah fulfills 180-day water promise as he commissions scheme that delivers 120million litres of water to Enugu City.

Today is D-day that the Governor promised Enugu City residents that they will see water when they opened their taps.

Residents expressed optimism on sighting jets of water flying into the air from burst pipes along major highways and streets.

Officials of State Water Corporation said they counted 20 burst pipes in various parts of the city that they quickly patched up.

Enugu Metro checks show that, for three days, pipe-borne water reached more than 40 percent of Enugu City areas.

The lucky districts currently enjoying steady supply include Abakpa, Emene, Independence Layout, New Haven, Ogui, GRA, Trans-Ekulu and Uwani.

Newer suburbs, including Awkunanaw, Garki, Idaw River, Achara Layout, and Ogbete are however yet to feel  the good news.

Officials said several households and estates have yet to connect and draw water from public grid.

Old transportation infrastructure

Three days ago, when the water was released for a test run, several old and brittle pipes began bursting in various parts of Trans-Ekulu, GRA, Independence Layout and Ogui Road.

It became clear, as Enugu Metro predicted in a prior report, that reticulation is a major challenge as most parts of Enugu suburb are yet to be piped.

“Presently,70 million litres of water are being transported daily, yet there are no off-takers for this volume because many have yet to connect to the lines,” a spokesperson, Reuben Onyishi, wrote in an article.

“Reticulation is work-in-progress as households get connected.

“What matters is that the daily water need of the city is even over-generated, as  old asbestos pipes are being replaced and places where pipes had not previously been laid,  are being connected.

“Networking and reticulation are ongoing in the entire Enugu city. For some areas that by nature of the topography pipes may not be extended, there are enough water stands already in place from where the people would have access to water.

“Already, 96 water stands have been built across the city. By implication, no one would require any storage facility as the daily water generated in Enugu flows ceaselessly,” he said.
