6. Allen Onyema: The Empathetic Businessman

If given the opportunity, majority of Nigerian youth today would gladly turn into economic migrants as unemployment rate climbed to and has remained in double digits for decades now. Each year, as tens of thousands, including graduates from our tertiary institutions, slide into chronic unemployment, many find ingenious ways to emigrate illegally. They wend their way to other African countries or stow overseas by air and by sea for a chance to find jobs, any type of job including the illegal. Both legal and illegal preoccupations eventually pitch them in deadly competition with the local population which feels threatened by the competition they bring and their famous boisterousness. The exasperation soon leads to resentment and, as happens intermittently in South Africa, boils over into xenophobic attacks and extrajudicial punishments. In the Eastern Countries, those found to be bringing in controlled substances or engaging in banditry are summarily tried and, when found guilty (which is more often than not) are executed. No amount of pleading by the Nigerian authorities, for example, has been able to stop national governments of some Middle Eastern and Asian countries from hanging or executing Nigerian youths found guilty of drug smuggling or armed robbery.

For the group that chooses to operate outside the law, nothing much can be done. At the other end where legitimate Nigerian business owners battle with xenophobia and extrajudicial assaults by security agencies, the government of Nigeria does her best to protect their interests, using economic and diplomatic levers. In the heat of the 2019 attacks of Nigerians in South Africa, one private businessman of conscience demonstrated that there is something an individual can do to show empathy to the plight of youths that have become economic migrants. This Nigerian, Chief Allen Onyema, intervened when it became apparent that, if given an opportunity, many of the youths being assaulted in South Africa would gladly come back home. Onyema, an airline owner, decided to deploy his planes at personal expense to bring back all those that wanted to flee from the hell that South African had become. He made three separate sallies, returning to a grateful nation almost a thousand economic migrants.  Allen Onyema is a revolutionary champion businessman and humanist, an icon of empathy, proactiveness, innovation and courage, and a true warrior of a new national integrity movement (NIM) – as I see it.
