In an Independence Day speech today 1 October 2023, Governor Chukwuma Soludo renames Anambra Airport after world renowned novelist Chinua Achebe.

He said the decision received wide acclaim and the crowd that gathered at the independence day parade acknowledged the gesture with cheers.

He recalled how Nigeria has refused to honour Achebe since his death, although he was offered and twice rejected national honours.

“Chinua Achebe was an African and global hero yet largely unsung at home.

“Achebe rejected national honours twice, in protest against what he perceived as injustice to his home state, Anambra.

“Today, Anambra will finally honour Chinua Achebe,” he said.

He said there is a “broad consensus that no one is more deserving to be named after the first airport in Anambra than Anambra’s all-time greatest gift to the world…”

“Consequently, we are committed to rename Anambra International Cargo and Passenger Airport Umueri to Chinua Achebe International Airport Umueri.”

He said the State will work with the Federal Government to upgrade the status of the airport from local to an international airport.

Gov Willie Obiano, Soludo’s predecessor, constructed the airport.
