‘Why We Converted Diagnostic Centre to Covid-19 Treatment Facility’

Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi today, 5 May 2020, explained that Enugu State Government had to quickly prepare the gigantic Diagnostic Centre only as a backup for treatment point of Covid-19 patients in the event that the State experiences a surge in infections from the dreaded virus.

He also said the emergency nature of the preparations was good for the Centre because it now 100 modern hospital beds with mattresses, pillows and beddings; 100 drip stands; 100 bedside lockers; 100 overbed tables and 100 ward screens, among others.

The Governor offered these explanations when he was visited by a team from the Nigerian Private Sector Coalition Against COVID-19 (CACOVID), which had come to support the state with additional medical items.

He said that so far, his government is ready with “a robust and well-resourced Multi-Sectoral Rapid Response Team, activated State Emergency Operation Centre (EOC) and three Isolation and Treatment Centres” located in Enugu and Nsukka.

He thanked the private iector initiative, led by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), for “complementing our modest efforts through their invaluable support,”

“CACOVID truly understands that we can only win this war together; as a people; as a country and as mankind,” he said.

CACOVID representative and team leader, Chiaka Mbagwu, who is the Regional Head, United Bank for Africa Plc for Enugu and Ebonyi States thanked the Governor for what he described as “unprecedented steps towards achieving the COVID-19 free situation in Enugu State.”

He also commended the Government for consulting “relevant agencies and stakeholders towards a comprehensive review of all measures put in place to curb the spread of COVID 19.”
